MBBS Admission Process

The National Testing Agency (NTA) organizes the NEET UG Counselling process for aspirants dreaming to become Doctor. The NTA is authorized body to conduct the NEET UG counselling in the entire nation. NTA is recognized by the supreme court of India. NTA organizes the counselling process to provide MBBS admission for MBBS colleges, 250 AIIMS institutes. The NTA conducts the counselling process for MBBS admissions into 600+ medical colleges, 15+ AIIMS, and 2 JIPMER institutions.

Candidates qualifying the NEET exam can apply for the counselling process for MBBS admission. Getting MBBS admission in Government colleges is very tough because of the high cutoff score and competition. Whereas getting admission in private colleges is quite expensive. Some of the private medical colleges charge huge donations. Students qualifying the NEET exam with good merit can only get MBBS admission in best government colleges.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) strictly assesses candidates’ merit in the NEET exam to determine eligibility for MBBS admission. Once the NEET results are declared, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) arranges the following admission process.

The MCC handles MBBS admission for 15% of All India Quota, as well as for deemed/central universities, the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), and institutes under the Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). The remaining 85% state quota seats are allocated by the respective state’s counseling authorities.

  • Some institutions might have additional eligibility criteria, such as a compulsory internship or rural service, as part of their admission process.

It’s important to note that eligibility criteria can change from year to year and can differ based on the specific institution, state regulations, and any updates in admission policies. Therefore, aspiring candidates should always refer to the official admission notifications and prospectuses of the institutions they are interested in for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

No, you need to pass NEET to study MBBS or BDS in India. NEET is the only way to get admission in medical and dental colleges all over the country.

Studying MBBS with a Low NEET Score

Candidates qualified in the NEET Exam with less score can try the following options.

State Counseling: States have their own way of selecting students for 85% of the seats. Sometimes, states have lower cutoff needed than the All India Quota. So, you might have a better chance if you apply through your state.

Management Quota: Some private colleges keep some seats for students who can pay more. You can apply for these seats even if your NEET score is low. But remember, these seats might be more expensive.

NRI Quota: If you or your family live outside India, some colleges have seats for you. Your NEET score might not need to be as high for these seats.

Candidates need not worry much about their NEET score. Even if the score is low they can try in different ways. Or they can even select the MBBS abroad option to fulfill their ambition.
